Ear Piercing and Tattoos Empty Ear Piercing and Tattoos

Post by ali_786 Sun Jun 06, 2010 1:29 pm

YAM
I have seen many male shian e Ali (a.s) who have pierced their ears whether its one or both ears....I have also seen many males who have religious tattoos on their body (mainly arms chest and back)....

1. Are Males allowed to pierce their ears ?
2. Are Tattoos Permissible In Islam? (Religious or Non Religious)

Could I Please Have Any Reference that are available.

Ya Ali Madad brother Ali.

For the ear piercing:

Piercing the ear of a boy is sunnah, and circumcision of a boy is from
the sunnah

Ali ibn Ibraahim, from his father, from al-Hussein ibn
Khaalid who said: I asked Abaa al-Hassan al-Ridhaa عليه السلام about
the celebrations concerning a birth, when do they take place?

He said: "Al-Hassan ibn 'Ali عليه السلام was not born except Jibra'eel
descended with congratulations for the Prophet
the seventh day. And he ordered him to name him, and give him a kunyah,
and shave his head, and have an 'aqeeqah for him, and pierce his ear.
When al-Hussein ibn 'Ali (as) was born, he was sent for on the seventh day
and these things were commanded." And he said: "And they sacrificed
two horned animals for him. And they pierced the right ear in its lobe
and the left ear at the top. They put an earring in the right and
jewelry/ornamentation* in his left."

As far as tattos are concerned i have not come across any hadeeth from the Aimma (as) prohibiting tattos.
Hopefully any other members who know more on the subject may be able to supply hadeeth on the subject, but it would seem tattos are not haram as they have not been prohibited by ayat or hadeeth.
*The footnote in al-Kafi says that this particular word refers to a
piece of jewelry which could be hung. Wasael al-Shia cites Lisaan
al-'Arab as saying: It is jewelry which is worn on the top of the ear,
underneath the earring.

If you also click on the link to a discussion on this forum regarding '4 questions' posted by another user, brother azadaar has posted some other hadeeth showing permissibility of wearing ear rings and it being a sunnat/ common practice during the time of the Aimma (as).
